Moving day has been part of the movies for decades. Sometimes a family is starting over in a new home. Sometimes the moving truck becomes part of the action. And sometimes the movers themselves practically steal the scene.
At Student Movers®, we notice these moments for an obvious reason: moving is what we do. So we put together some memorable examples of movers, moving trucks and relocations on film — along with a mover’s-eye view of what makes each one stand out.
Moving (1988): A Movie Where the Movers Are Part of the Plot
If there is one movie that belongs at the top of this list, it is Moving. The 1988 comedy stars Richard Pryor as Arlo Pear, whose family relocates from New Jersey to Boise, Idaho. The move itself becomes a major source of chaos, including a moving company that does not exactly provide five-star service.
The film is especially fun from our perspective because the moving crew is not just background scenery. The movers, the truck and the family’s belongings become central to the story. It is basically a moving-company nightmare turned into a comedy.

Toy Story (1995): One of the Most Famous Moving Trucks in Animation
The original Toy Story builds toward Andy’s family moving to a new home. The moving truck becomes part of the movie’s climactic action as Woody and Buzz try to catch up with Andy and the rest of the toys.
For a generation of moviegoers, that moving van is probably one of the most recognizable moving trucks in film. It also captures something real about moving day: once the truck leaves, the move is officially happening.

Beetlejuice (1988): Moving Into a House That Is Already Occupied
Beetlejuice takes the idea of moving into a new home in a very different direction. After Adam and Barbara Maitland die, the Deetz family moves into their Connecticut house — except the Maitlands are still there as ghosts.
The new family immediately begins transforming the home, which gives the movie its wonderfully strange version of the familiar “new owners move in and make the place their own” story.

Home Alone (1990): The Move That Almost Happened
Home Alone is not a moving-company movie, but the McCallister house has become one of cinema’s most recognizable family homes. The film is a reminder of how much a house can become part of a family’s identity — and why leaving a longtime home can feel like much more than transporting furniture.
Up (2009): Taking “Moving Your Home” Literally
Pixar’s Up takes relocation to an impossible but unforgettable extreme: Carl Fredricksen sends his entire house into the sky with thousands of balloons.

Movies Where Moving Starts the Story
Moving is a natural storytelling device because a new home means a new neighborhood, new people and a fresh start. Horror movies, family movies and comedies frequently begin with somebody arriving at an unfamiliar house. The move gives filmmakers an instant reason for the characters — and the audience — to discover a new place together.
That is why moving shows up in everything from supernatural movies to animated classics. In real life, most moves are considerably less dramatic, but the basic idea is the same: one chapter ends and another begins.
